Dog Grooming in San Diego 2026: Salons, Mobile Vans, Dog Washes

14 October 2026 Β· 9 min read

San Diego is a very easy city to own a dog in and a fairly demanding one to keep a dog clean in. Dogs here get beach days all year, long walks on dusty canyon trails, and a dry season that leaves plenty of grass seeds on the ground. So it makes sense that the city has a wide mix of grooming options: full-service salons, mobile grooming vans and trailers that come to your driveway, and dog wash shops where you can bathe your dog yourself.

This guide walks through those options using the San Diego listings in our directory, all pulled from Google Maps. It covers the kinds of businesses you will find, which parts of the city they cluster in, the local conditions that shape how often your dog needs a groom, and how to book. It is not a ranking. Every business mentioned links to its listing page, where you can check the address, phone number, hours and Google reviews. For the full list, browse pet groomers in San Diego or mobile pet grooming in San Diego.

The three main ways to get a dog groomed in San Diego

Most San Diego grooming businesses fall into one of three groups. Knowing which one fits your dog saves time before you start calling around.

Grooming salons. A salon is a storefront where trained groomers bathe, dry, brush, trim and style your dog. You drop the dog off and pick them up later the same day. Salons are the most common option in our San Diego listings, with more than 30 in the city. Some are small studios with one or two groomers, some share space with a pet boutique, and a few belong to regional chains with several locations. Salons usually handle haircuts, breed-style trims, nail trims and ear cleaning, but the exact menu varies, so read each business's own site.

Mobile grooming. A mobile groomer brings a fitted van or trailer to your home or workplace and grooms your dog inside it. Your dog skips the car ride and the waiting area full of other dogs, which some owners prefer for anxious, older or reactive dogs. We list nine mobile grooming businesses based in San Diego.

Dog washes. Several San Diego shops have "dog wash" in their name. At a self-service wash you bring your dog, use the shop's raised tub, warm water, shampoo, towels and dryers, and do the bathing yourself. Some of these shops also employ groomers for full haircuts, so the line between a wash and a salon is not always sharp. Call ahead if you want one or the other.

Grooming salons by area

Salon addresses in our listings are spread across the city, but a few areas stand out.

Uptown: Hillcrest, University Heights and Mission Hills. This is one of the densest grooming areas in our data. Mimo Grooming Studio on Park Blvd in University Heights describes itself as a grooming salon and pet boutique offering baths, breed-specific styling, hand-stripping and creative coloring. Nearby you will find Dirty Dogs Hillcrest on University Ave, The Barking Lot of Hillcrest on Park Blvd and Besties DogSpa in Mission Hills.

North Park, South Park and El Cajon Blvd. The streets east of Balboa Park have a cluster of small salons, including Pet Palace on Ray St, Chic Paws Pet Grooming on Pershing Ave, Pure Pawsh on 30th St and Belly Scrub on El Cajon Blvd. Further east along El Cajon Blvd, Pet Beloved describes itself as a dog and cat grooming salon offering bathing and haircuts. If you have a cat, Felines and Friends Grooming, also on El Cajon Blvd, calls itself a feline-first salon.

Downtown. High-rise living means many downtown dogs never see a backyard hose. Downtown and East Village salons in our listings include City Dog on Park Blvd, Spawtlight Dog Salon & Spa on E St and The Den Paw Spa on Ash St.

Northern and eastern neighborhoods. In Carmel Valley there is Zoomin Groomin on Pacific Highlands Ranch Pkwy and Barks & Bubbles Holistic K9 Spa. Clairemont has Paw Alley Pet Grooming on Genesee Ave. To the east, Suds N Pups has a location on Waring Rd and another on Navajo Rd, and PET SYMMETRY Dog Grooming is on Rolando Blvd.

Mobile grooming vans and trailers

Mobile groomers do not have a storefront you can walk into. The address on a mobile listing is usually a business or mailing address, not where the grooming happens, so pay more attention to the service area the business lists on its own site.

Raise The Wuff Mobile Dog Grooming is the most reviewed mobile groomer in our San Diego listings. Its website says it grooms in a custom-built trailer at your home, office or another convenient spot, mentions fear-free grooming certification and a live camera so owners can watch the groom, and takes bookings by phone. The site also notes that you need room for the trailer, about three car lengths, in a driveway, in front of the house or in a parking lot. That is a useful detail in San Diego, where street parking in Hillcrest, North Park or the beach areas can be tight.

Other mobile groomers in our listings include Awesome Doggies Mobile Pet Grooming and Private Mobile Grooming, both with addresses in the University City area, Rooney Groom near Pacific Beach and Bay Park, Disco Dogs Mobile Spa with a 92120 address, and Soapy Pets Mobile Grooming in the South Bay near Otay Mesa.

Mobile grooming suits some households better than others. It works well if your dog gets carsick or stressed by busy salons, if you work from home, or if you have several dogs you want groomed in one visit. It works less well if you have no driveway or parking near your door. Ask any mobile groomer whether they need access to your water or power, how they handle parking, and which neighborhoods they cover on which days.

Dog wash shops for do-it-yourself baths

A self-service dog wash is the San Diego answer to sand in the coat after a beach morning. You get a raised tub, so no bending over a bathtub, plus warm water and supplies, and nobody has to clean wet sand out of your shower.

Dog Beach Dog Wash on Voltaire St in Ocean Beach sits a short drive from Ocean Beach's well-known off-leash Dog Beach. Its website describes a hand-wash setup with warm water, shampoo, grooming tools and towels, with staff cleaning up afterward, and lists nail trims during set hours.

San Diego conditions that affect grooming

Sand and salt water. Dogs that swim in the ocean come home with salt and fine sand deep in the coat, especially double-coated and curly-coated dogs. A rinse with fresh water after the beach helps, and many owners book a full bath more often in summer. If you go to the beach a lot, a dog wash near your route home can be easier than bathing at home.

Foxtails and grass seeds. San Diego's dry months leave foxtails and other barbed grass seeds along trails, canyons and vacant lots. They catch in paws, ears and long coats. Some owners ask their groomer for a tidier trim around the feet and ears during the dry season and check their dog after every walk. If you think a seed has gone into an ear, nose, eye or between the toes, call your veterinarian rather than a groomer.

Heat. Inland neighborhoods get much hotter than the coast in summer and early fall. Ask about drying methods and how a salon or mobile van keeps dogs cool, and avoid booking long sessions for flat-faced breeds in the hottest part of the day. Do not assume that shaving a double-coated dog keeps it cooler; ask the groomer what they recommend for your dog's coat.

Busy seasons. Summer, the weeks before holidays and Saturdays fill up first. Popular salons and mobile groomers with strong reviews can book out, so schedule your next appointment when you pick your dog up.

Parking and access. Storefront salons in Hillcrest, North Park and downtown often rely on street or metered parking. Leave a few extra minutes for drop-off. For mobile grooming, confirm where the van or trailer will park before the day.

How to book a groomer in San Diego

  1. Decide on the format. Salon, mobile or self-service wash. Your dog's temperament, coat and your parking situation usually decide it.
  2. Shortlist by area. Use the San Diego city page and the category pages to find businesses near home or work.
  3. Read the business's own site. Check the services it lists, how it books (phone, online form or booking app) and whether it handles your dog's size and coat type.
  4. Ask about rates. We do not publish prices because they change and often depend on size, coat condition and the service. Check current rates directly with the business.
  5. Share your dog's history. Tell the groomer about matting, skin issues your vet has diagnosed, anxiety, bite history and any recent vaccinations they ask for.
  6. Plan the next visit. Ask how often the groomer suggests coming back for your dog's coat, and book ahead during busy months.

Owners still deciding between formats can compare the mobile grooming listings and the salon listings side by side. With a beach in reach, sand will keep coming home in your dog's coat, so pick a groomer you can get to easily and book again without hassle.
