About Watermelon Mountain Ranch
Watermelon Mountain Ranch is New Mexico's largest no-kill animal shelter, having found homes for over 150,000 dogs and cats since we started in 1996. We are a network partner of Best Friends Animal Society and travel across the southwest rescuing animals on high-kill shelter euthanasia lists. Would LOVE to see if Watermelon Ranch responds to THIS one! My fiancé adopted a dog after seeing her online and making an appointment, first named Lupita then changed to Koa after adopting her. They noticed she had a bad leg when meeting the dog and asked about it, which they said was “nothing” and a “birth defect” but it kept getting worse up until her vaccination appointment where they asked the vet about it and they said it was from an injury. They told them what procedures were options for Koa, which they couldnt afford where they got her from (both were thousands of dollars which they didnt have at the time) When upon telling them it was an injury and NOT a “birth defect” as they mentioned, they said because they missed it and it was life altering and painful they could “surrender” her and and give them a refund of $200 (what they paid for Koa) but my fiancé’s family didnt want to surrender her because they didnt want to lose her and would pay it but Watermelon Ranch SWORE they would be the FIRST people to be able to adopt Koa back. After her surrender, my fiances family emailed and called to check on Koa, only to find out Koa was adopted by A DIFFERENT FAMILY! DO NOT ADOPT FR

My fiancé and I recently visited Watermelon Ranch after the heartbreaking loss of my dog of 14 years. We were hoping to meet some dogs and eventually adopt when we found the right fit. When we learned the adoption fee was over $400, we simply said that the adoption fee wasn’t really within our budget. We never said we couldn’t afford to care for a dog—we were only referring to the one-time adoption fee. At that point, we were told they would not show us any more dogs because they felt we wouldn’t be able to afford one. We were completely refused the opportunity to meet any other dogs based solely on that comment. I absolutely understand that rescues have a responsibility to ensure animals go to loving, financially responsible homes, and I support screening adopters. However, making that decision without asking a single question about our finances, our experience with pets, or our ability to provide long-term care felt incredibly judgmental and unfair. I had just lost my best friend of 14 years, and instead of being treated with compassion, I left feeling embarrassed and judged. A one-time adoption fee is not the same thing as being financially capable of providing a loving, sta

Hello Maddy and "Team Watermelon Mountin Ranch" Thank you so much for my awesome experience at the Ranch. All of the team supported my adoption concerns with great humbleness and above and beyond excellent customer service. From the time I arrived without a appointment - I was greated so kindly by Front dest Male assistant and then the hospitality I received to support my application for adoption was kind. After viewing the book of all Dog Pic's and my guideness to see and listen to the "Tech" she was so understandable on my questions and concerns for adoption and I will return with my Son to see Ms. Kelly - female German Shepard mix who gave luv vibes I so enjoyed after my loss of Gracie a blue nose pit bull rescue after 8yrs due to Kidney failure. I have adopted "Angel" a wonderful large indoor cat litter hand feed rabbit who is ready for my niece to have as her first "pet -best friend". I just want to make the right decisions for my future with my next best "Dog" friend and even though I have reserched most NM adoption places.... Watermelon Mountain Ranch is the best even the loyalty to cleanliness and excellent care for all Animals. Thanks for all you smiles, God Bless

Yes, they do have a vetting process. People should be happy about this not angry. We have had two separate great experiences with Watermelon Mountain Ranch adoptions. Our little guys are happy brothers in a loving home. The staff is friendly and caring. They know their adoptable residents very well and give great advice. They also supplied us with items we needed for our babies. I cannot recommend them more!

Went in super excited to look at a Dog, the lady had us fill out paperwork with a bunch of questions (I totally understand why they ask these questions) but only to get denied to even see the puppy the reason they gave was because my grandmas dog is pregnant. We explained my nana doesn’t live with us and that they’re in Texas but they visit every month or so and she still said no and that they’re trying to stop an excess amount of dogs coming into this world. We really wanted to look at the puppy but the lady made us feel judged and profiled like we weren’t enough.
