Really wanted a blue heeler named Ax. The kennel staff were great to deal with and they seem like they really care for the dogs. However the lady up front has the worst condescending attitude. She is not welcoming, she is not helpful. She sits at the front on her phone with the lights off. Gets irritated as soon as you walk up. Any question you ask her, she finishes her answer to you with a condescending "does that make sense?" Backhanded question. Ended up going to lucky paws and adopting a dog there, I just hope the dogs and kennel staff are treated well, they all seemed scared of the front office people.

These people are lazy and very quick to pawn off responsibility to another shelter if they can. I found two stray puppies and tried to turn them into the shelter. But since I have an Illinois license, they refused. The supervisor (the masculine looking one) claimed its company policy that I be a Rio Rancho resident. But when asked where that was written anywhere, she said she didn’t have to tell me. Naturally, she couldn’t prove that it’s in policy. Ultimately, they refused to take in stray puppies, and now I have to complain to city leadership like a Karen until I’m satisfied everyone knows. The dogs will be accepted tomorrow when an actual Rio Rancho resident brings them. THATS the hold up, everyone. They want a physical license. Multiple shelters told me Rio Rancho is typically problematic and unhelpful when it comes to animal rescue. I can only imagine what these snakes are like to the animals behind closed doors.

Visit and Operational Clarity for Lost Pet Owners On the morning of Oct 15th 2025, I visited the Rio Rancho Animal Shelter to inquire about my lost cat, hoping he might have been brought in. I arrived at approximately 8:00 AM, the listed opening time, after confirming the hours of operation online. Upon arrival, I was informed by a staff member that I would not be able to check the kennels until 10:00 AM. This two-hour delay, which was not posted on the shelter's website or listed under the general hours of operation, caused significant inconvenience, as I live a considerable distance from the facility. I returned promptly at 10:00 AM. A staff member directed me to the cat kennels to check myself. However, upon reaching the cat area, I was informed by another staff member who was sweeping/cleaning that the area would be inaccessible for approximately another 45 minutes. Feeling frustrated by the repeated delays and unwilling to wait further, I described my lost cat to the staff member working in the kennels. She informed me that they did not have a cat matching my description. I departed shortly thereafter. My main concern is the lack of clear and consistent communication re
