We’ve taken our dog Dexter to Dr. Cunningham for years and she is the best. She is knowledgeable and honest. She is thorough in her examinations and recommendations, outlining your options based on the diagnosis, cost of treatment, and likely outcomes. She never pressures or tries to “up-sell” you on unnecessary procedures. Last year Dexter needed surgery requiring anesthesia. Dexter has a mild heart murmur so I was incredibly nervous. Dr. Cunningham talked us through everything and made sure Dexter was given the proper care and attention he needed. She called me right after he woke up from surgery to confirm that everything went well. We frequently get compliments about how amazing Dexter looks and acts for his age (14) and I attribute a part of it to her care. We just got a new puppy and have been seeing Dr. Asato while Dr. Cunningham is on leave. She and her tech are great too (as a chihuahua parent, I love how much her tech loves chihuahuas). Choosing who to care for your fur babies is a big decision, and you cannot go wrong with Dr. Cunningham and Kailua Makai Pet Hospital.

Can't recommend Dr. Thornburg enough! We brought our 9-year-old dog to see her for some complex medical issues, and from our very first visit, she was incredibly kind, compassionate, and knowledgeable. She took the time to thoroughly evaluate his condition, explain her recommendations, and develop a comprehensive treatment plan for his widespread skin issues. The results have been remarkable—we’ve seen such significant improvement that we no longer need to see a specialist. We feel so fortunate to have found Dr. Thornburg and highly recommend her to anyone looking for outstanding veterinary care.

Dr. Cunningham is, without question, the best veterinarian we have ever had. She is always straightforward, honest, and incredibly informative, taking the time to explain everything clearly so we can make the best decisions for our pets. What truly sets her apart is the genuine care and compassion she shows to both animals and their owners. We faced a scary situation with our dog and were told by an urgent care veterinarian that emergency surgery was needed. Even in that stressful moment, the only person we trusted to perform an emergency hysterectomy was Dr. Cunningham. Her expertise, professionalism, and dedication gave us complete confidence that our dog was in the best possible hands. Dr. Cunningham consistently goes above and beyond. She combines exceptional medical knowledge with kindness and integrity. We are incredibly grateful for the care she has provided to our pets over the years and cannot recommend her highly enough. Any pet owner would be fortunate to have Dr. Cunningham as their veterinarian.

Our 15-year-old Chloe was diagnosed by another neighborhood clinic Vet that she had Vertigo. We informed that Vet our Chloe does not take oral meds at all, despite that he prescribed oral meds. Unhappy and dismayed that she was obviously suffering, we sought out alternative medicine to help her condition and checked with our daughter who takes her dogs for acupuncture and recommended to see Dr. Wendy Asato at Makai Pet Hospital in Kailua. Dr. Asato is absolutely awesome! our girl handled the acupuncture procedure with no problems and we are so overjoyed with her recovery!! She had a total of 4 treatments which helped her to regain her walking stability, straightened her tilted head, gave her more energy and appetite! She started to bark loudly again at visitors to our place, our security alert system was back!!
