Terrible. My significant other volunteers frequently and when we filled out an application to adopt a CAT we were denied because our DOG is not spayed for medical reasons (heart murmur). When we asked the staff for an explanation on why the staff was very rude and said nothing besides “policy”. Is our dog supposed to get our cat pregnant or what? I just really would like to know.

Man at the front desk is incredibly rude and is completly unwilling to help. We arrived at the shelter an hour and 10 mins before they closed inquiring about getting a microchip placed for my new dog. Man stated we had to have an appointment. Since we were literally the only people at the shelter I asked if there was an appointment tonight. He said no. I then asked when the next available appointment would be and he responded with "literally any other day of the week" During our entire interaction he did not look up from his computer screen once. This mans customer service skills are nonexcistant. This was not my first interaction with this staff member since I have been an Iowa City resident for over 30 years and a responsible pet owner for over 20 years. Every interaction with Ive had with this man he has came off as judgemental, rude, and unhelpful. Time for him to find a new job.

Impressive facility. Looks clean and well maintained. We had some pet toys and other items to donate. They have a donation bin for that purpose. Friendly staff.

I BEG YOU, DO NOT GO TO THIS SHELTER. This was the worst experience I have ever had with a shelter. While I was in class, my roommate came home and my dog ran out of the apartment. He is a rescue that I adopted a year ago, and this behavior is extremely unlike him. He is very anxious, and I’m sure he was trying to find me. My roommate started searching while I rushed home, and he was gone for a maximum of an hour before we were told he had been taken to the Iowa City Animal Shelter. I immediately drove there, completely distraught. My roommate called because they were closing in three minutes. The man who answered asked if I had my dog’s vaccination records. My heart dropped because they were still at the apartment, but all I cared about was getting my baby back. My roommate asked if they could stay open a few minutes longer so we could quickly grab the paperwork since we live nearby. The man showed absolutely no sympathy. In a cold tone, he told me my dog would have to stay overnight. I immediately began panicking and crying. I explained that my dog is a rescue, extremely anxious, and terrified of other dogs barking, and that he would not be okay spending the night alone in a k
