I rarely leave negative reviews, but I was extremely disappointed with my experience at High Country Motor Lodge. I booked a cottage weeks in advance for a business trip at a rate of $428. Because my company has a strict hotel policy, I actually had to get a special exception to book the cottage since it exceeded our normal nightly limit. After driving 2.5 hours to Flagstaff, I checked in only to be told that my reserved cottage was unavailable and I would be placed in a standard room instead. No one contacted me beforehand—I didn’t find out until I was standing at the front desk. The manager offered a 10% discount and waived the amenity fee, but that still didn’t make the situation right. My coworker booked a standard room for two nights and paid around $398 total. Even with the discount, I was paying more for one night in a standard room than she paid for two nights. Had I known my reservation wouldn’t be honored, I simply would have booked the standard room at the lower rate from the beginning. Saw great reviews and was very excited to come here, it was a let down though. We pre-paid with a nice deal for the week leading up to the 4th. It looks nicer inside than outside but the rooms are very motel quality. You can hear everything outside and next door at all times of the day and night. It was a nice location though, only a few minutes away from downtown and that is what ultimately has me giving 2 stars. It is better than others, but nothing special. The pool and fireplace is nice, but standard amenity; and the games/bar/general store was unique, but not worth an overpriced nightly amenities fees. These amenity fees were also charged in sum at the end of the trip, which was unexpected as we had already pre-paid and a $35 nightly fee plus tax adds up when you don't know it exists. Their front desk staff is incompetent, every time we went up they had no real answers or confidence in their replies. Our card was charged every night for the full price of the stay, thankfully we had our card declining such however these would have been going through. This place doesn't look like much when you pull up to it off the highway, but once you step inside it's magical!! This was obviously once a lower-tier motel, but it has been restored into a hip oasis and it was such a fun stay! Everyone was super friendly and it felt like a low-key party the whole time we were there (in a fun, relaxing way). We could have sat sipping coffee by the outdoor fire pits all day! The Nordic Spa experience was also super fun! I am normally not a huge fan of saunas, but the HCML sauna was beautiful and very very clean. Pairing it with the cold plunge was also fun!
