About Heartland Humane Shelter & Care

Heartland Humane Shelter & Care is a local non-profit animal welfare organization working to make Benton County a safe and healthy place for every pet, and for the people who love them.

Founded in 1966, our mission is to build a more compassionate community by teaching humane messages to our youth, caring for homeless animals, and strengthening the human-animal bond.

Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across Oregon's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

Hiring Animal Abusers? In 2024/25 I made a formal report that 2 of their fosters/employees (my roommates Lily and Liley) let our entire house (and their animals) get severely infested with fleas and didn’t take proper action to solve the issue way before it got bad. Heartland continued employing both and promoted one to work in their Marketing department. I don’t think a shelter should have continued employing animal abusers, especially considering the amount of evidence I had on this case. Makes me extremely disappointed with local non profit that should take these things seriously..Makes me disgusted that the woman I reported to cared more about work drama than the animals she works for.. Makes me hope my animal never gets lost and ends up at a foster home where they will end up worse off. I don’t think there is anything Heartland can to do fix this situation and I will continue warning others.

My 2 year old female German Shepherd Pit Bull Mix was recently under these disgusting people's "care" on her 3rd bite quarantine. I had gone to court to fight for my girls life! The judge DID NOT rule against my pup, yet these vile, disgusting people STILL EUTHANIZED HER! I had a plan for getting her away from Corvallis to a high school buddy's of mine, who lives in the country in Washington. 1 of the Corvallis PD Resource Officers fully supported this plan! He completely advocated for my girl. Yet, they still did this! They lied and said they "loved, cared, and adored" her, yet still allowed this! They tried to blame the upper management, court, and the police! The

Here's my experience. Still seems surreal. I have tried to reach out to anyone at the shelter regarding my complaint, and nothing. Here what I experienced and wrote: Hi Kari (Executive Director), my name is Jason. I called you yesterday but haven't heard anything. My fiancé and I adopted a cat from your shelter a couple of days ago, and we are extremely upset and disappointed by both the lack of disclosure regarding her medical condition and the way we were treated when we brought her back yesterday. We went into this adoption in good faith and with a lot of emotion and commitment. After bringing her home, we discovered significant medical issues that were never clearly disclosed to us during the adoption process. Had we been fully informed, we would have been able to make an educated decision before taking her home. What made the situation even more upsetting was the experience we had when we returned her. We were clearly distressed, hurt, and overwhelmed, and instead of receiving compassion or even basic empathy, we were simply handed paperwork. While we were sitting there upset, staff asked us about the free samples from yesterday, which honestly felt incredibly tone-deaf gi

We adopted Samwise (previously Albert) from Heartland two days ago. It was a wonderful experience from start to finish. April gave us so much information about our new furry family member and went above and beyond to answer our questions. Emily was so wonderful up front and even helped me reverse search to find out what happened to a stray I dropped off about a year ago. Every volunteer that we interacted with was knowledgeable. These folks are so loving and care deeply about the pets staying with them. We're so happy to have Sam in our lives, and would adopt from them again in a heartbeat!
