About Dogwood Acres Pet Retreat
Dogwood Acres began out of a desire by owners, Kurt & Audrey Reichardt, to find a quality pet retreat for their beloved Black Lab, Casey. They wanted a place where Casey could get lots of outdoor exercise & tons of personal attention in a clean & comfortable setting.
Recognizing that their expectations for a pet care facility were high, but assuming there must be others that share the same desires for their pets, Kurt & Audrey launched Dogwood Acres in September 1997.
The business has improved & grown over the years, but the vision was clear & still remains. Kurt & Audrey wanted to create a fun & safe environment where pets love to come & play and pet owner feel confident in the superior care that their dogs & cats are enjoying.

Excellent experience! I was in a pinch and needed a kennel for a day, and they were so accommodating. My dog absolutely loved the experience. I was blown away by how well run this operation was. It was very clear that not only was customer service at the top of their list, but so was animal care and safety. I haven't boarded my dog too often and now I'm moving away from the Edgewater area for a year or two, but when I come back I will definitely leverage their services more often

We recently moved to the Maryland area and decided to try Dogwood Acres for a four day boarding stay for our dog while my husband and I traveled. Unfortunately, our experience raised serious concerns. When we picked our dog up around 12:30 in the afternoon, he immediately ran outside and urinated for several minutes straight, followed by urgently needing to relieve himself again for a bowel movement. As longtime dog owners, we know our dog’s routine very well. He is walked every morning and evening, and if he has truly been taken on a “mile walk,” he absolutely would have relieved himself during that time. Concerned, I went back inside and asked staff when he had last been taken out. I was told he had gone on a mile walk at 10:30 a.m. However, based on our dog’s condition and behavior upon pickup, that explanation simply did not align with reality. What troubled me most was not just the possibility that our dog may not have been properly walked or given adequate bathroom breaks, but the feeling that we were not being told the truth. Any boarding facility caring for animals should prioritize honesty, transparency, and the wellbeing of pets in their care. I understand that board

I highly recommend Dogwood Acres - we’ve been sending our Doberman to daycare and boarding for years now and have always had a great experience. They will work with you if your pet has special needs or if you have any concerns. Wonderful staff at the front as well as the back. They truly care about your pets, thanks for being awesome to Knox!

Sadie, our retriever, stayed with Dogwood Acres for a 10 day stay while we were in England and we couldn’t be happier with the service. She was well cared for and had a great time with all of her puppy friends. They are super organized and send daily feedback. 6 days into the stay they noted that she was gaining a bit of weight and called us up to see if we wanted to scale back the feedings or the treats. We appreciated the contact and resolving the problem together. This is an example of their care. They are not afraid to call us up with questions or suggestions.

This is the first time I've ever had to leave my dog somewhere. I was nervous leaving her just like my dog was nervous to be not by my side. The people at dogwood acres made it a really smooth transition and made sure to take good care of her. I got constant updates while I was gone and some pictures of her having fun there when I came back. It definitely made my vacation easier knowing that my dog was happy and in good hands.
