About Cats in the City - TANDEM Cat® Grooming

Cats in the City – Portland (Powell) offers feline-only grooming under the TANDEM Cat® model, a trauma-informed, behavior-first approach developed by Master of Social Work Shawn Lioyryan and neuroscientist Dr. Daniel Lioy. This structured method blends feline body mechanics, behavioral fluency, and team-based stabilization to create a grooming experience that prioritizes safety, calm, and nervous system protection.

Using coordinated support from one to two trained groomers, each cat’s posture and movement are gently stabilized while grooming is performed with precision and care. This reduces stress and improves safety — especially for anxious, senior, or medically complex cats.

In Portland, price depends on breed, size, coat condition and temperament: small short-coated dogs cost least, while doodles, poodles and double-coated breeds take longer and cost more, and matting adds a dematting fee. Ask whether the groomer is certified, how dogs are dried (cage dryers versus hand drying), whether rabies vaccination proof is required in Oregon, and how long your pet will stay. Most dogs need a groom every four to eight weeks. Saturdays and the weeks before holidays book up first, so schedule ahead and check the listing for hours, phone number and Google rating.

Portland is in Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest, where winters are mild and wet, summers are dry and pleasant, and outdoor recreation drives a lot of local business; hours change little through the year. US addresses list the street number and name, then the city, state abbreviation and ZIP code, and Portland follows the same pattern; a suite or apartment number such as Ste 200 refers to a unit inside the building. The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

This will probably be one of the most unusual reviews I’ve ever written, because what I’m raving about may seem unrelated to the actual grooming services — but the change in my cat’s behavior after visiting Cats in the City has been incredible. My cat was a feral kitten. He’s bonded only with me, and despite living in this home for the past year, he’s always been terrified of the living room and completely unwilling to interact with guests. Most of the time, he hides under the rug beneath my bed whenever anyone comes over. That’s exactly why I chose Cats in the City. Their emphasis on trauma-informed care during grooming really stood out to me, and paying extra for that kind of thoughtful approach was never even a question. So, when I picked him up and they told me he had been extremely anxious, very scared, and had apparently won the “Strongest Cat of the Day” award (LOL), I wasn’t surprised at all. They also suggested that future visits might go more smoothly with a mild sedative. Honestly, I fully expected him to spend the next week hiding under the rug once we got home. Instead, something amazing happened. I brought him home, left for a couple of hours, and when my friend

These are my go to people for all of my non veterinary cat needs. I have done boarding. And that was done great. They took great care of my babies and sent pics and videos. I have them on call to do in-house sitting and they will even take care of my house plants and the feral porch cats that I feed too. I do them for grooming every month. I have 3 cats. 1) Anya our queen, who was a good girl. A Russian Blue. They gave her beautiful baths and cleanings and during summer a beautiful little "bear" shave that looked perfect on her. We just lost her to cancer and they went above and beyond to send us beautiful sunflowers. 2) Dimitri our knight, who is a very Squirrelly boy. A Russian white with same thick coat but a totally different body type than othet Russians (think mini white panther but with a thicker coat) But even so they always made him look good!!. He got a lion cut and they worked with me to get the fading exactly like I wanted for his comfort and my esthetic. He is a dirty boy with a dirty ears and eyes. But he always looked good afyer a visit here. They cleaned his eyes and ears and boots and claws. And his shave was always so perfect. 3) Meredith the lost princess, who wa

Cats in the city is just the best. They take such good care of my sweet baby Jet, he comes back so clean and pampered, and happy to feel that way. The reports I get following the appointment really make me feel good about letting them take care of my cat. Will definitely be a returning customer as long as I have cats.

I’ve been taking my two cats here for years and I highly recommend. I wouldn’t have pictured either of my cats to ever get groomed, they hate even getting in the carrier. But they both do great and are so happy afterwards. My female especially loves her spa days and she is not usually a fan of strangers. My male is overweight and has arthritis and they really go above and beyond to make sure it’s a good experience. He goes in pretty greasy and drandfruffy and comes out so soft and beautiful. It’s a little pricey depending on what you get done but still worth every penny. The receptionist Rebecca is wonderful also, very friendly and helpful. The whole team is great.

Cats in the City tandem grooming/groomers are the best of the best! From the moment we decided to adopt a Persian kitten, we knew we’d need help taming her wild mane. Pearl, our Persian, loves spa day! And we love how much Cats in the City love her. We never have to worry about her, and she always comes home looking great, and minimally stressed. We also adore the “report card” and “awards” she receives post grooming. Cannot recommend them enough! People and, most importantly, cat approved!
