About Alliance of Therapy Dogs
We are an international registry of certified therapy dog teams. At ATD, we provide testing, dog certification, registration, support, and insurance for members who volunteer with their dogs in animal-assisted activities. Our objective is to form a network of caring individuals and their special dogs who are willing to share smiles and joy with people, young and old alike.
All dogs tested for ATD’s Dog certification must be up-to-date on vaccines and have had a negative fecal exam in the last year. There is no restriction on diets or supplements given to our canine members. Dogs may also be fed treats on therapy dog visits if the facility also allows treats. ATD is open to registering any breed of dog except wolf or coyote mixes.

We have been with ATD since 2025. AKC listed them as a recognized organization and it was their alternative review process that made it possible to become certified. I appreciate the fact that everyone has to pass a background check, that we are all covered by insurance and that everyone is held to the same high standards. The educational information and member support are valuable as well. I highly recommend them to anyone looking into therapy dog organizations.

My dog was certified as a therapy dog through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. He was a therapy dog at the USO at Fort Drum, NY and so many soldiers and family members were happy to see him! I moved and didn’t get to renew his certification in time. The company tells me that he will need to redo the whole certification. I would never recommend this organization. I spent a great deal of time and money to get my dog certified as a therapy dog and now, one year after achieving certification, he is no longer a therapy dog.

Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD) is a FANTASTIC ORGANIZATION with about 22,000 members. Unlike most other Therapy Dog Organizations, ATD (1) makes it very clear how dogs are evaluated, so that you can train your dog for success, and it typically takes 3 visits with a Tester to achieve certification (2) ATD has a large number of Testers, and facilitates evaluation if there isn't a tester fairly nearby (3) provides LIABILITY INSURANCE It also is easy for organizations to request a Therapy Dog Visit from ATD (I've heard this is a problem with other therapy dog organizations), and is EXCELLENT at communication with members. GO ATD! If you are interested in Therapy Dog work, ATD is WONDERFUL.

Alliance of Therapy Dogs is a very good organization. I am might be biased, but I could not hear back from one local outfit and other I would have to wait six months. ATD made it fairly easy to get certified even without them have a local presence.

We are certified with Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Every time we have a question or concern, ATD always steps up and gets us an answer. They are very professional and friendly. They also provide leads to volunteer opportunities. If you are interested in become a certified therapy dog team, I highly recommend getting certified through Alliance of Therapy Dogs.
