50 Fathoms Pet Shop

If i could give this place 0 stars i would. I visited this establishment expecting that an independent pet store would maintain higher ethical standards and better animal care than larger commercial chains. Unfortunately, my experience proved otherwise. A friend purchased a cockatiel from this location that was severely ill with a critical respiratory infection; despite being presented with official veterinary documentation, the owner was uncooperative and dismissed the professional diagnosis. Additionally, a cockatiel I purchased from the shop was diagnosed with Chlamydia psittaci, a contagious zoonotic disease that poses serious health risks to humans. On top of these health issues, the store improperly clips the birds' wings, causing serious physical imbalance and poor muscle development . (I'll attach a photo)While some animals sold here may appear healthy, the evident lack of proper medical care, animal welfare standards, and professional accountability makes supporting this business a significant risk. If you choose to shop here expecting a healthy animal, be prepared for severe medical issues, sudden pet loss, or High veterinary expenses. I strongly advise anyone who cares

Very experienced and knowledgeable staff... at the same time being very helpful in answering questions re: care, provisions and specific information relative to your specific animal. I bought my curly haired tarantula from them and before I left with my spider, they gave me a full rundown on how to keep my lil Ozzy the tarantula happy and healthy. Love this place!!!

Disappointing conditions animals are left in. It seems like the owners care more about equipment and hardware sales than animal health. I’ve received just plain incorrect and bad advice on fish care from employees on multiple occasions. I’ve been given the cold shoulder and treated like a nuisance for asking for assistance. I’ve retuned to retry this store on multiple occasions and have almost always been disappointed. So I have not been back in a few months while thinking over this review. There are significantly better options in this city for aquarium hobbyists. Aquatic Specialties, Causeway Pets, Reef Consortium, and Coral Connection, to name a few. Honestly, I rather drive out to Poseidon’s in Picayune for reptiles than go to 50 Fathoms. Credit where it’s due, I have had pleasant experiences just a couple times with one of the employees (I wish I could tell you her name) who has been helpful and even willing to assist with returns. I know that the previous owner years ago had no interest in maintaining a healthy habitat for the creatures living at the store. Honestly, that sentiment seems to have held. It’s a fine store to get equipment or food from, although you’d have better
